Writing Prompt – Mother, May I?

Writing Prompt – Mother, May I?

May, the month of mothers.

The mother of all months.

The month of buds and blossoms.

The month seedlings grasp their claim on mother earth, and while they strive to be independent, they cling to the roots of the tree from which they came.

We can look at this month in so many ways. We can contemplate, celebrate, thank, remember, mourn, or want to forget our own mothers. Sometimes we might feel the pressure of pending Mother’s Day rituals and obligations because we don’t feel very “Hallmark” about our mothers, or about our relationships with them. Or maybe we cannot wait for the day when we can shower her with flowers, sweets and extra love to last throughout the year.

Take some time to think about your mother.

  • Do you notice any similarities between your mother and your grandmother? Describe the personality traits, character qualities, or physical attributes they share.
  • In which ways are you most like your mother? In which ways are you most unlike her?
  • Write about a lesson you have learned from your mom.
  • Describe a piece of jewelry that your mother always wears or wore. What makes (made) this piece of jewelry so special to her?
  • Finish this thought: If I could change one thing about my relationship with my mother, it would be……

Was there a woman in your life who took the place of your natural mother, or who, at some point in your life, stepped in for your mother?

  • Who is this woman?
  • How did you come into a relationship with her?
  • How did she impact your life? Where is she now?

Or perhaps you are a mother.

  • Perhaps your children are near or far.
  • Maybe you are estranged from them.
  • Maybe you are best friends.
  • Who are these people that you have created?
  • Do you wonder how your children view you as a mother?

If you are not a mother, do you wish you were one?

  • How do you feel about not being a mother?
  • Are you a mother to other children, other souls? Are you a mother to an animal soul?

Or let’s look at the month of May as a Spring month.

Does this month have any significance for you?

  • Is it a favorite month?
  • What memories do you have of this month, or this time of year?
  • Did a significant life event occur for you in this month? Births, baptisms, graduations weddings?

Another way to look at the word, “may”: Permission

  • Do you need to give yourself permission to do something?
  • Is it permission to start something, or to stop something?
  • To stop or start feeling, acting, or reacting in a specific manner that you are not manifesting currently?
  • What is something you have been waiting for permission to do?
  • From whom are you awaiting permission?
  • What will it take to get permission? What will you do with this permission?
  • Why do you need this permission?

Happy day and happy writing everyone
